Double Take

Dateline: 6/13/00

While finding articles for my "Women's Issues In The News" headlines page, I am often struck by the illuminations that can come simply from the juxtaposition of two articles about the same subject. In fact, simply putting two articles side by side sometimes offers more "commentary" and "insight" than I could hope to offer in several paragraphs. Here are the most recent articles that caught my eye, and caused me to do a "double take," along with additional quotes from the articles. This page will be updated periodically, as new "illuminations" occur!

Sunday In New York
U.N Women's Conference - Scrutiny the Day After
6/11/00 - Yahoo! News
Five years after a landmark global conference in Beijing set down universal rights for women, Secretary-General Kofi Annan said a just-concluded review had enhanced rather than reversed these gains.

In a statement distributed on Sunday, Annan praised new measures to combat sex trafficking of women and girls and domestic violence at a week-long meeting of 180 nations that called for accelerating campaigns for equality between the sexes.

Annan said he was "delighted" that the gains made by the Fourth Global Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995 were "consolidated, protected and advanced" when a "Beijing+Five" meeting ended on Saturday after a week of heated arguments.

Women Attacked in Central Park
6/13/00 - MSNBC
In broad daylight, in Central Park and with hundreds of police nearby, a mob sexually assaulted at least 10 women in separate attacks. An amateur videotape showed men dragging several women to the ground, groping them and stripping at least one of all her clothes. One victim, who was attacked while skating, said she approached officers three times, telling them an unruly crowd had assaulted her, but each time the police did nothing.

“I never felt in my entire life that I couldn’t protect myself until then,” said Anne Peyton Bryant, a kickboxing teacher from Manhattan. “I felt confused. I felt terrified. I felt traumatized.” Patrick Orlando, who was with Bryant, claimed that police “had absolutely no interest in going toward that area. No one stood up. No one moved. No one got on the radio to report the problem.”

Beijing+5 Final Wrap
The week-long review of the Beijing Platform For Action found some progress, a number of remaining obstacles, and set some new targets. The conference produced some gains for international women's rights, but a lot of time and energy was spent simply defending past gains. You guide reviews the effort, and provides links to major documents and media coverage.

Sex Assaults in Central Park
The numbers look more staggering every time a new report comes out: Right now, they stand at 32 women assaulted by up to 60 men in broad daylight, with at least 10 onlookers standing there videotaping it, and cops nearby refusing to get involved. About Crime/Punishment Guide Bill Bickel will keep you up to date on this continuing story.

Central Park Assaults: What's Race Got To Do With It?
As the events that occurred in and around Central Park on June 11 continue to unfold, it seems there are still more questions than answers. But the question that's on a lot of minds, but conspicuously absent from the press reports is: What's race got to do with it? About Race Relations Guide Kimberly Hohman looks at the complex issue of race, stereotyping, and crime.
