We're looking for a few good women. They're not in the history books. So we asked you to find them - and you did! The "Women Who Ought to Be Famous" Collection started with a thread in the Women's Issues forum called "Really Cool Women who ought to be famous." Readers found dozens of women that you ought to have heard of - but probably never have. Read on and be amazed.

Christine De Pisan (1365-1429) Professional writer Pisan wrote poetry, biography and social and political commentary, including two books about the role of women, "The Book of the City of Ladies" and "The Treasure of the City of Ladies".

Maria Montessori developed the Montessori method for teaching children. She was the first woman to earn an MD from the University of Rome (1894). She had to flee Italy under Mussolini because she was an outspoken anti-Fascist. Although Montessori schools are well known, not many people realize that all schools today have adopted at least some of her methods. Her last words when she died in 1952 were to her son, "What are YOU planning on doing to reform the world?"

How about Lydia Litvak, Hero of the Soviet Union, the first female 'ace' fighter pilot who shot down 13 German aircraft/

Also, Klavia Fumicheva, who lead an all female bomber group in Russian throughout world war 2

And of course, the most illustrious woman of the 20th century, Hanna Reitsch. The first PERSON to fly a helicopter, the first PERSON to fly a combat jet aircraft, the first PERSON, to fly a rocket aircraft (after six men had died in the attempt) the ONLY person to fly a cruise missile. The ONLY person to fly the last aircraft out of Berlin. The ONLY person to break a world record (for gliding) at the age of 66. The ONLY female to win an Iron Cross first class.

Mary Kay Ash - Founder and CEO of Mary Kay Cosmetics - one of the first entrepreneurial women in America and a marketing and management genius.

Emily Roebling - Wife of Washington Roebling, the son of John Roebling, the designer and builder of the Brooklyn Bridge. When John died at the start of construction, Washington took over. Unfortunately, he had a nervous breakdown, and construction was completed by his wife, Elizabeth. She is credited with teaching herself engineering and her knowledge was so keen that she was able to draw plans, improve efficiency and complete the Brooklyn Bridge to her father-in-law's exact design.

Australia's most prestigious literary award - the Miles Franklin Award is funded from the estate of Stella a.k.a. Miles Franklin. Her best known novel - My Brilliant Career (1901) - is the story of a young woman choosing to be a writer rather than a wife. It was filmed in 1979 by Jillian Armstong, starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill, all at the beginning of their own brilliant careers.
