Populist Format, Populist Questions
In Tuesday's debate, the questions, not the candidates, won the night, reports Lisa Tolin, About Guide to U.S. Liberal Politics. The crowd didn't buy the rhetoric that government is bad. Instead, they were inclined to ask for federal help to fight HMOs, lower insurance costs, battle pharmaceutical companies and stop violence in the media.
Debate 3: Foreign Policy Lite
Texas Governor George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore faced only two
questions on security and international affairs in the final presidential

Your Guide's View of the Candidates
George Bush
Although I think he is personally a moderate, he has shown himself to be far too willing to bow to the conservative right on social issues - the very issues that most often affect women, and especially low-income women.
Al Gore
I think Al Gore is an incrementalist, somewhat in the mold of President Clinton. While this could bring about some real gains in women's issues, I think, like Clinton, we'll all be wishing for more during a Gore term.
